Executives on Sustainability: Mike Splinter, CEO, Applied Materials

Listen to this interview with Michael Splinter talking about sustainability at Applied Materials. In 2003, Mike Splinter was named president and chief executive officer, as well as member of the Board of Directors of Applied Materials, the global leader in nanomanufacturing technology solutions for the electronics industry.

Solar By applying our four decades of thin film on silicon experience to the manufacturing of solar modules, the total volume of solar panels manufactured each year can be vastly increased. At the same time, Applied Materials' products are aimed at reducing the cost per watt of energy produced, to become more competitive with current electricity generation.
Glass Glass allows light into our homes and offices while also allowing us to see the world around us. However, plain glass is not the best solution because in the summer it lets heat in, and in the winter it lets heat out. Low emission coated glass can have a major impact in reducing solar heat gain, or winter heat loss, with a corresponding benefit in lowering fuel consumption and green house gas emissions.
Lighting Applied Materials, working with partners in the European OPAL program, are exploring the use of Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) structures. The future of OLED is being evaluated as well as other lighting technologies that can produce the light needed while using far less energy each day.
Alternative Energies Applied's expertise is the application of very precise, thin films to substrates at high manufacturing volumes, low defect levels, low manufacturing cost with high yields. Applied Materials' Adjacent programs are exploratory in nature, seeking opportunities to utilize our four decades in thin film applications in new ways.
